Dr. Daria Bakhareva

I am an Instructional Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Mississippi. I hold a Ph.D. in Business Administration from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, specializing in behavioral and experimental economics.

My research examines how charitable institutions shape economic behavior across different historical and institutional contexts. I employ diverse methodological approaches — from instrumental variables using high-frequency crowdfunding data to controlled experiments to historical analysis of census records. My work on contemporary charitable giving uses novel datasets like GoFundMe campaigns, where I exploit exogenous shocks to identify causal effects, while my economic history research examines how religious charitable networks facilitated the Great Migration and shaped Southern labor markets in the early 20th century.

In my teaching, I emphasize practical applications of statistical methods to real-world business challenges. My courses focus on building both intuition and technical proficiency, using tools like Python, Stata and even MS Excel! I help students develop the quantitative skills essential for data-driven decision-making while showing how empirical methods can illuminate both contemporary economic questions and historical transformations.
